Biography

Born in Leatherhead in Surrey, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the 3 Foot in 1857, aged 18 years. He served with the 3 Foot until 1868, rising to the rank of Drum Major. Between 1868 and 1872, he served as Sergeant Major to the 2 and 4 West Indies Regiments. He finally transferred to the 68 LI, as Band Master, in 1872. He took his discharge in 1878, after 21 years, and settled in Kingston upon Thames. Benjamin Skelton was awarded the 68 LI's Total Abstinence Medal. This medal was awarded to men of the 68 LI who were teetotallers - a rare occurrence at the time!
